Artifact Details

Name: US Mechanical Brain promises new discoveries
Date: August 1944
Description: The back reads: A U.S. seaman and a naval officer operate the world's largest calculating machine, a 35-ton mechanism "Brain" capable of solving mathematical problems ranging from algebra to dynamic equations of the solar system. Despite its size the machine may be operated by one man, not necessarily a specialist, but problems must be submitted by a mathematician. The calculator is the invention of Commander Howard H. Aiken of the U.S. Navy, a professor of applied mathematics in civil life. Use of the machine is restricted to the Navy until after the war when it is expected to open new vistas of applied science.
