The World at War Museum has been collecting objects and stories that give an insight into people’s experiences during the Second World War, preserving them for future generations.
 
Seeds for VictorySeeds for Victory
During both World Wars, the Seeds for Victory campaign was mainly used to encourage people to grow their own Victory Gardens. During World War II Seeds for Victory was expanded to help other countries by providing them with seeds so they can grow their own vegetables.

During the war years, the allied governments encouraged their citizens to grow fruit and vegetables for themselves in order to prevent food shortages. Also, by growing food locally, transportation could be utilized for military purposes instead.

During World War, propagandists instigated hatred for the enemy and support for America's allies from the countries fighting the Axis powers. Most of the images of those items is nowadays considered politically incorrect or offensive. During the Second World War it seemed that there were hardly any limitations on the type of content being published.

Trench ArtTrench Art
Trench art might have been around as long there were wars. The name trench art was first introduced during the First World War were soldiers spent long hours in the trenches. To kill time, soldiers started to craft with items they had normally laying around. Spent shell casing was frequently used because they were easily available and plentiful. Other materials, such as wood and bones, were mostly used for carving arts.

In the early days of automatic cigarette package wrapping it became clear that something was needed to stiffen the packages. Adding a piece of cardboard prevented the cigarettes from becoming crumbled. The tobacco card, also known as trading cards, was born. It did not take long for some companies to put advertising or pictures on the insert to make the product more attractive to the smoker.
